History of Poirier House
Jean Poirier and his
wife Madeline Richard had three children; Jean Baptiste,
Joseph, and Michel. Jean's sister Cecile and husband Olivier
Landry had one child, Jean Antoine. Jean, Cecile and their
families were two of the first four Acadian families who settled in St. James Parish along the Mississippi River
(now La. 18) in the summer of 1765.
In 1936, part of the
Poirier family relocated their homes and a business (a butcher shop)
about five miles down the river on La. 20 West. The slaughterhouse
for the butcher shop was located left of the Poirier House. The lumber for
Poirier House comes from the original house built in the 1800's. Through the decades, six
Poirier families have lived in "Poirier
House." (Descendants of the Poirier
family still live in this area.)
The house of today
offers central air and heat, and modern plumbing. A complete
kitchen equipped with stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator and
dishwasher are available for the guests to use. A washer and dryer
are also located on the premises.
A comfortable den
adjoins the kitchen. Bedrooms available for accommodation feature
twin beds, a full brass bed, a queen size rice bed, a queen size sleigh
bed, a wrought iron day bed with trundle and a king size bed.
